NAMASTE MEMORIAL

I began Namaste Memorial by painting several Mudra pieces on the September 19, 2001 issue of the New York City Subway map.  Mudras are powerful symbolic hand gestures – yoga for the hands.  I focused on mudras whose symbolic meaning seemed most necessary: mercy, forgiveness, letting go of fear…  I turned my studio into a sanctuary by hanging the Mudra paintings, lighting dozens of altar candles then moved my table to the center of the room – heaped with my supplies, thousands of fresh rose petals and gold ink.   I painted the Sanskrit word Namaste on 7000 rose petals.

Some translations:

"I honor that place in you where the whole Universe resides.
When I am in that place in me and you are in that place in you, there is only one of us."

"It is a statement of recognition and love for the unity that underlies and inspires all of humanity."

"I bow to the divine in you."

"The divinity within me honors the divinity within you."

The 7000 petals were on display in my exhibition Assumed Presence, The Loft at ACT, Indianapolis, IN and returned with me to NY where I completed the ritual in the manner taught me by the Venerable Lama Tenzin Yignyen, by dropping the petals in the East River at Fulton Ferry landing.
