Glyndor Gallery, Wave Hill - Bronx, NY
March 3 – May 25, 2007
Beside Your Shimmering Doorway was a site-specific installation at Glyndor Gallery, created for the exhibition exploring American poet Emily Dickinson.
For the project the riverside end of the South Gallery was treated
as if it is a room in Emily Dickinson’s home during her lifetime. The
entire installation was a portrait of sorts of Dickinson herself.
The two windows on that end of the Gallery was hung with white sheer
curtains upon which is subtle embroidery of vintage maps of
Amherst. A chair like those used by Dickinson was embroidered with a map of Amherst during
Dickinson’s lifetime. A table similar to her writing table served as
a sculpture stand for altered/painted seed catalogues from the 1860’s.
The table also held a Victorian bulb
forcing vase with bulb to open during the run of the show. Positioned as
if looking out the window towards the river, was a life size replica
of Emily’s signature white dress. The dress made from handmade white
paper shot through with leaves and flower petals, with a row of pearl
buttons and is displayed on a simple mannequin.

Also included in the exhibition were paper household objects Dickinson would have likely used -- a watering can and gardening gloves. On the walls were silhouette portraits of the furniture of Dickinson’s home, and the fences and roads surrounding her home. These refer back to the Dickinson family portraits done in silhouette, a common medium of its day, as well as to others of my own works. These pieces are cut from vintage wall paper with botanical themes backed with silk velvet. They are framed in vintage and reproduction frames.
