Meridith McNeal, Signora della Casa (Valentine - colored detail), 2008, nib pen and ink on paper
I am an intention based and content driven artist. My work is about memory and the cultural, physical and social history of a place or individuals. The ideas I set out to convey compel me to manifest work to best tell a particular story. My materials are selected for the purpose of deepening the story and for the evocative quality of the medium. I aim to create works that embody a layering of time – the old and new in any one particular piece.
My work has strong roots in domestic, sewn, decorative and feminine traditions. In smaller pieces I frequently work in a series format and at times I strive to create a dialogue between concurrent exhibitions of my work. I use a wide variety of mediums from artists’ books to
paintings and sculpture; often employing less traditional materials
including thread, maps and vintage paper ephemera.

In March/April 2008 I had the privilege of being an Artist is Residence at the American Academy in Rome. During my magical stay I created a new body of work motivated by my daily experiences in Rome. My already wide base of materials and methods has expanded to include photography.
